Murder Investigation Launched After Woman Dies Following Leicester Roadside Assault

A murder investigation has been launched in Leicester after a woman who was seriously assaulted following a road traffic collision tragically died in hospital.

The incident occurred just after 5:30pm on Tuesday, 24 June, when police received reports of a white BMW 1 Series overturning on Aylestone Road, near the junction with Welford Road and the Voco hotel.

Moments later, the vehicle’s 23-year-old male driver reportedly exited the car and ran down Aylestone Road toward Leicester Royal Infirmary, where he launched a violent, unprovoked attack on a female pedestrian in her fifties.

The woman suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham, where she sadly died this afternoon (Thursday).

Suspect in Custody

The male suspect was detained at the scene and initially arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, dangerous driving, assaulting an emergency worker, drug offences, and driving under the influence.

Following the victim’s death, he has now been re-arrested on suspicion of murder. A warrant of further detention has been granted, and he remains in police custody.

Police Appeal

Detective Inspector Emma Matts, from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit, confirmed that the investigation has now moved into a homicide inquiry.

“This woman was sadly subjected to a serious assault... Her family and close friends have remained at her bedside and tragically she died this afternoon,” she said.

“We have a dedicated team of detectives working around the clock to determine the full circumstances of what happened. I urge anyone who witnessed the incident, has dashcam footage, or saw the BMW being driven prior to the collision to come forward.”
