Wheelchair Faker Jailed for Violent Beer Heist in Staplehurst

A violent robber who faked being in a wheelchair to swipe beer has been locked up for assaulting a security guard in Staplehurst.

Crash, Clash and Crisis

On the evening of 3 June 2025, 19-year-old Davey Brown’s crime spree kicked off when the car he was driving smashed into a stationary vehicle in Edenbridge. When the driver of the other car got out, Brown drove towards her before speeding off through a red light.

Moments later, Brown rocked up at the Sainsbury’s on Station Road pretending to need a wheelchair – with an accomplice by his side. He stashed two crates of beer under a jacket on his lap and tried to walk out without paying.

Violence Erupts at the Checkout

A security guard stepped in to stop Brown, who retaliated viciously. He punched the guard and hurled stolen beer cans, bottles, and other items. Another shop employee was hurt by the flying loot during the chaotic scuffle.

Brown tried to bolt but was caught within half an hour by police. He then unleashed a torrent of threats and abuse at the officers during his arrest.

Heavy Sentence for Dangerous Criminal

Brown, from Winch’s Garth in Staplehurst, later pled guilty to robbery, assault, property damage, dangerous driving, and other charges at Maidstone Crown Court.

On 6 November, he was sentenced to three years and one month behind bars and banned from driving.

A 17-year-old accomplice was also jailed for six months in a young offenders’ institute on 12 July.

PC Ricky Strong said: “Brown is a violent man who endangered another motorist, attacked a security guard and their colleague, and made threats to attending police officers.

“He left a man with injuries requiring hospital treatment for simply carrying out his job.

“A custodial sentence means Brown will be unable to put any other members of the public at risk for some time.”
