A tense afternoon in Margate saw residents forced from their homes after police found “suspicious items” in a local flat. A bomb disposal team swooped in, sparking a major evacuation on four streets.
Evacuations Shut Down Four Margate Streets
Police launched the operation around 4pm, sealing off Rosedale Road, Glencoe Road, Wharfedale Road, and Malham Drive. Residents described a chaotic scene with emergency services everywhere.
Cordon In Place, Experts On Scene
The Ministry of Defence’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal team is now inspecting the suspected items under police supervision. Kent Fire and Rescue is also on site assisting the operation.
A cordon remains in place while officials carefully assess the risk. Thanet District Council has stepped in to support evacuated residents, using Hartsdown Leisure Centre as an evacuation hub.
Local Authorities Urge Calm
Cllr Jack Saunders (Lab), representing Dane Valley ward, reassured residents: “There is no cause for concern at this stage. The situation is being handled carefully and professionally. Teams are working hard to ensure everyone affected is safe and well looked after. Thank you for your patience and understanding.”

Kent Fire and Rescue confirmed crews were called to assist Kent Police but offered no further details.
One Arrest Made
Police have arrested one individual in connection with the incident as investigations continue.
