Police are on the lookout after a fire tore through a disused building in Eastbourne on Sunday evening.
Blaze Breaks Out at Former School
Emergency services rushed to the scene at around 5.40pm on 19 October after reports of a blaze at the old Moira House school site on Upper Carlisle Road.
Fire crews swiftly brought the fire under control. Thankfully, no one was hurt. But detectives believe the fire was deliberately set.
Four Boys Sought Over Suspicious Activity
Officers are hunting for four boys seen entering the deserted building earlier that afternoon. Their movements could hold the key to the blaze.
Police want anyone who spotted anything fishy between 3.30pm and 6pm — especially if you have CCTV, dashcam, doorbell, or mobile footage — to get in touch.
Witnesses can contact Sussex Police online or call 101, quoting serial 936 of 19/10.
Health Warnings Amid Asbestos Fears
A multi-agency spokesperson addressed local anxiety about asbestos linked to the site.
“Our information indicates there is no known asbestos in the affected areas. While this makes the risk of asbestos exposure very unlikely, we understand people may still feel concerned,” they said.
They warned smoke from fires can cause coughing, sore throats, wheezing, and eye irritation. Asthma sufferers are urged to carry inhalers. Anyone feeling unwell after being near the fire should see their GP or call NHS 111.
Emergency services advise to dial 999 immediately if you suffer chest pains or severe breathing troubles.
