A vape has sparked a house fire in Aldwick, prompting firefighters to warn the public about the dangers of rechargeable devices.

West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service rushed to a property on South Avenue at 10.41am on Thursday, 2 October, after reports of a fire.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus battled flames that destroyed a first-floor bedroom using a high-pressure hose reel. Investigations found a vape in the room, believed to be the fire’s cause.

Experts Warn: Lithium-ion Batteries Can Ignite Fires

“Rechargeable devices such as e-cigarettes and vapes contain lithium-ion batteries which can start a fire,”

said Watch Commander Duncan Warwood.

He urged people to never use devices with damaged batteries and only buy electronic devices from reputable UK retailers. He also stressed the importance of working smoke alarms and regular testing.

“In the event of a fire, always get out, stay out, and call 999,” Warwood added.

Top Tips to Avoid Battery Blazes

“Lithium-ion batteries are safe during normal use, but present a fire risk when over-charged, short-circuited, submerged in water, or damaged,”

warned Station Manager Darren Wickings, Chair of fire safety group LIBERATE.

  • Always use the charger supplied or manufacturer-recommended
  • Charge devices on flat, stable surfaces
  • Never leave devices charging unattended or overnight
  • Unplug chargers once fully charged

LIBERATE, which includes 178 members from fire services and waste management, works to raise awareness and share best practices about lithium-ion battery risks.

Keep your home safe—handle rechargeable devices with care or risk a devastating fire.
