Four Rescued by Eastbourne RNLI After Becoming Trapped by Tide at Beachy Head Lighthouse

Overview

Details

Four people, including a child, were rescued by Eastbourne RNLI after being cut off by the incoming tide near Beachy Head lighthouse.

Solent Coastguard tasked Eastbourne’s D-Class Inshore Lifeboat (ILB) following reports that the group had become stranded with no safe route back to shore.

The incident occurred near the base of the cliffs, a known hotspot for walkers misjudging tide times. The ILB crew arrived promptly and located the three adults and child completely isolated by the rising sea.

Working under the watchful guidance of Coastguard Rescue Officers stationed at the clifftop, the RNLI crew safely transferred all four casualties aboard the lifeboat and took them to safety at Cow Gap Steps.

An RNLI spokesperson said:

“This is another reminder of how quickly the tide can turn a pleasant walk into a dangerous situation. Thankfully, all casualties were uninjured and brought ashore safely.”

RNLI Safety Reminder

The charity is urging anyone heading to the coast to always check tide times and plan walks around low tide, not during the incoming tide. Hidden risks such as fast-rising water, strong currents, and inaccessible exits make certain stretches of coast particularly hazardous.

“Use a reliable tide app, check local tide tables, and if you’re unsure—ask a lifeguard or coastguard,” the spokesperson added.

In a coastal emergency, always dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.
