A devastating tragedy unfolded in Dumfriesshire as a police officer en route to a fatal crash scene received the gut-wrenching news that his wife was one of the victims.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday morning on the A75, where a collision involving two cars and a van claimed the lives of two individuals. Among the deceased was 41-year-old Melissa Delaney, who was driving a Nissan Qashqai, and a 35-year-old man who was driving the van.

The husband of Mrs. Delaney, a traffic police officer, was reportedly on his way to the scene when he was informed of his wife’s involvement in the tragic accident.

Tributes poured in for Melissa Delaney, described as a dedicated nurse and an integral part of the Dumfries Baton Twirlers (DBT) club for nearly 15 years. The club, in a heartfelt message, expressed condolences to her family, highlighting her unwavering support for fellow members and her pride in her daughters.

Abbie Davidson, a member of the DBT, reflected on the profound impact of Mrs. Delaney’s loss, emphasizing the tight-knit bond within the club and the irreplaceable void left by her absence.

Social media platforms also became avenues for mourning, with friends and acquaintances reminiscing about Mrs. Delaney’s warmth and kindness. Sarah Wilson, a childhood neighbour, recalled fond memories and lamented the tragic loss, echoing sentiments of shock and grief shared by many.

As investigations into the crash continue, Road Policing Inspector Adnan Alam extended sympathies to the families and friends of the victims. He urged anyone with information or dashcam footage of the incident to come forward, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in piecing together the events leading to the tragedy.

The collision, which occurred around 6:20 a.m. near Annan, involved a Peugeot Boxer van, a Nissan Qashqai, and a Renault Clio. The surviving driver, a 49-year-old individual, escaped unharmed.

The community stands united in mourning the loss of Melissa Delaney and the other victims, as authorities strive to unravel the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
