Middlesbrough Man Jailed for Grooming and Child Sexual Abuse After Years of Online Deceit
A 23-year-old man from Middlesbrough, Shabaz Hussain, has been sentenced to nine years in prison for a series of child sexual offences, concluding a years-long investigation led by Cleveland Police’s Paedophile Online Investigation Team (POLIT).
The sentencing, delivered in May 2025, follows Hussain’s calculated and manipulative grooming of a girl from the age of 12, during which he posed as a child himself and even fabricated a fake female profile to exploit the victim’s trust.
Grooming Uncovered by POLIT
Cleveland Police launched their investigation after receiving a referral regarding Hussain’s online communications with a minor. Investigators uncovered a pattern of predatory behaviour, revealing Hussain’s long-term deception and abuse.
He was convicted on multiple charges, including:
-
Possession of indecent images of children
-
Arranging or facilitating the commission of a child sex offence
Hussain’s abuse escalated over time, culminating in an arranged meeting with the victim—then aged 15—under false pretences. A forensic review of his devices revealed damning evidence leading to conviction on a dozen offences.
Police Praise Victim’s Courage
PC Evans, of POLIT, commended the bravery of the victim:
“I’d like to pay tribute to the victim for their courage in supporting our enquiries. They had to relive their experiences with Hussain as we gathered evidence. His deceit shows the danger he posed. I’m relieved he will now spend time in prison.”
Evans added:
“This case highlights the serious dangers of online interaction, especially when young people engage with individuals they don’t actually know. Always be cautious.”
Community Protection and Parental Vigilance
This case is part of Cleveland Police’s wider efforts to combat online exploitation. The conviction ensures that a dangerous predator has been removed from the community, allowing the victim and her family to begin the process of recovery.
Police are urging parents and guardians to closely monitor their children’s digital activity and educate them about online risks. Support and resources are available from organisations such as the NSPCC and CEOP.
Ongoing Campaign Against Exploitation
Hussain’s sentencing is part of a broader crackdown on child sexual exploitation across Middlesbrough and the wider Cleveland area. Police continue to encourage the public to report suspicious behaviour and support victims.
“Community vigilance remains key,” said Evans. “The bravery of this victim has ensured that a predator is now behind bars—but our work is far from over.”
