Inquest Opens into ‘Unusual’ Death of Ilford Pensioner Mohammed Akram

An inquest has been opened into the death of Mohammed Akram, 84, whose body was discovered at his home on Staines Road, Ilford, on June 12.

Mr Akram’s death has been described as “unusual” and is now the subject of a formal investigation by East London Coroner’s Court. The inquiry will explore whether the pensioner’s catastrophic injuries were caused by accident or were intentionally inflicted.

Injuries and Cause of Death

Senior Coroner Graeme Irvine confirmed during Thursday’s hearing that Mr Akram was found with an incised abdominal wound, leading to haemorrhagic hypovolemia – a fatal loss of blood.

“That cause of death triggers in my mind the necessity to open an inquest,” said Mr Irvine.
“If a cause of death is unnatural or is unknown, a coroner should hold an investigation.”

Mr Akram was discovered unresponsive and cold to the touch. Despite the rapid arrival of police and paramedics, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

No Signs of Foul Play, But Questions Remain

Initial inquiries by Metropolitan Police determined there was “no evidence to suggest that Mr Akram’s injuries were caused by anybody else,” and foul play was ruled out. The case was subsequently referred to the coroner due to the unexplained and unexpected nature of the death.

Mr Irvine, however, noted that the circumstances are “far from typical” and requested a formal witness statement from the CID officer who concluded there was no third-party involvement.

Family to Participate in Inquest

Mr Akram’s son and daughter were present at the inquest opening. Coroner Irvine designated them as “interested persons”, giving them the right to legal representation and access to all investigative materials.

He asked the family to provide a full written account of events leading up to the incident, including “what you saw and what you heard” on and before the date of death.

Next Steps

A full inquest is now scheduled to take place in December 2025, when the court will examine evidence, hear from witnesses, and determine the circumstances surrounding Mr Akram’s tragic death.

The community in Ilford remains shocked by the incident, with residents hoping for clarity as the investigation continues.
