A Spokesman for Highways England said:

The A2 in Kent is closed in both directions between the Pepper Hill Interchange (Pepperhill B262, Longfield (B260)) and the Spring Head Interchange (Gravesend (W), Northfleet A2260, Ebbsfleet Int’l).

This is due to a serious collision.

Kent Police, Kent Fire & Rescue, South East Coast Ambulance Service, Air Ambulance Charity Kent Surrey Sussex and National Highways have resources on the scene and en route.

The road is expected to be closed for a protracted period.

Diversion Route (westbound/Londonbound)

Follow the route marked with a solid square symbol on local road signs:

  • Exit the A2 at the Pepper Hill Interchange
  • At the roundabout at the end of the slip road take the third exit on to the B262 Hall Road
  • Continue to the next roundabout and take the second exit on to B262 Springhead Road
  • Continue to the next roundabout and take the first exit on tothe A226 Thames Road
  • At the next junction with the A2260 turn left
  • At the next roundabout take the first exit to remain on the A2260
  • At the next roundabout take the second exit to join the link road on to the A2 via the Spring Head Interchange

Diversion Route (eastbound/Coastbound)

Follow the route marked with a solid circle symbol on local road signs:

  • Exit the A2 at the Spring Head Interchange
  • On the slip road keep right to access the roundabout (do not take the fast link road on the left)
  • At the roundabout take the second exit
  • Keep left on the distributor road to the Pepper Hill Interchange
  • Bear left on to the B262 Hall Road
  • At the first roundabout proceed all the way around to take the fourth exit back onto B262 Hall Road
  • Keep left to re-join the A2

Delays are likely on the approach to this closure, with additional journey times also expected on the diversion route.
