Former Sussex Police Investigator Admits to Misconduct Over Sexual Relationship With Witness
A former Sussex Police investigator has pleaded guilty to misconduct in public office after starting an inappropriate sexual relationship with a woman he met during a live investigation.
David Gamlin, 58, admitted the offence at Southwark Crown Court on Monday (June 30), where it was revealed that the former officer pursued the relationship between June and September 2021 while serving with Worthing CID.
An investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) concluded that Gamlin had used his professional position to initiate and sustain personal contact with the woman, culminating in a sexual relationship that breached expected ethical standards.
IOPC Investigation
The investigation into Gamlin’s conduct was launched in August 2022 following a mandatory referral from Sussex Police. The IOPC found clear evidence that Gamlin had failed to uphold the integrity of his role, engaging in a relationship that exploited his position of trust.
A spokesperson for the IOPC stated:
“The public expects police staff and investigators to act with integrity at all times. This case shows that abuse of position will not be tolerated.”
Departure from Force and Sentencing Date
Gamlin left Sussex Police in March 2023 prior to the conclusion of the investigation. He has since been charged and will be sentenced at Southwark Crown Court on 6 October.

A Sussex Police spokesperson confirmed the force had fully cooperated with the IOPC investigation, adding:
“We are committed to the highest professional standards. Where individuals fall below those standards, they will be held to account.”
The case adds to growing national concern over the abuse of position by individuals in policing roles, with watchdogs urging forces across the UK to implement tighter safeguards against misconduct.
