WhatsApp users are being warned they have just hours left to check if their smartphones are still supported, as the popular messaging platform prepares to drop support for three iPhone models starting Monday, May 5.
The move will block affected devices from sending and receiving messages, as WhatsApp phases out older operating systems to ensure better security and feature compatibility.
Which iPhones are affected? The three iPhone models losing access to WhatsApp are:
- iPhone 5s
- iPhone 6
- iPhone 6 Plus
These devices, first released as early as 2013, are unable to run iOS versions newer than iOS 12.
Starting from May 5, only iPhones running iOS 15.1 or newer will be supported.
Apple had already ceased major updates for the affected models, and now WhatsApp is following suit, citing security and functionality concerns. Other major apps like Spotify and Instagram have already pulled support for iOS 12.
What should users do if affected? WhatsApp recommends upgrading your device to continue using the app. Options include:
- Newer iPhones, such as the iPhone 16e, starting at £599/$599.
- Android alternatives, including the Google Pixel 9a and Samsung Galaxy A56.
Users can still rely on SMS or iMessage, but WhatsApp’s popular group chat and media-sharing features will no longer be available on outdated devices.
Why is this happening? WhatsApp says device and software changes happen often and require regular updates to maintain security.
Outdated devices not only miss out on new features but can also pose security risks as hackers exploit vulnerabilities in older operating systems.
Important Reminder:
If your iPhone is listed above, consider upgrading to maintain full WhatsApp functionality and keep your communications secure.
