Wiltshire Man Jailed for Killing Brother with Single Punch at Motocross Event
A man has been sentenced to two years in prison for the manslaughter of his brother during a violent altercation at a motocross event in Upper Wanborough, Wiltshire.
Ben Starr, 35, of Woodside Avenue, Ripley, appeared at Swindon Crown Court today and pleaded guilty to manslaughter after admitting to fatally punching his brother Lee Starr, 38, during a dispute at Foxhill Motocross Track on 22 August 2024.
Family Argument Turns Fatal
The court heard that the brothers became embroiled in a heated argument during the summer event, which escalated into a physical fight witnessed by several bystanders, including their own children.
After being separated, Ben struck a final punch as Lee attempted to walk away. Lee collapsed moments later and tragically died from his injuries.
Heartbreaking Victim Statement
In a harrowing statement read to the court, Lee’s wife described the profound loss suffered by their family:
“Lee was cruelly and senselessly taken from me and our children… every single day is a fight just to keep going without him. The future we dreamed of was erased.”
She added that Lee, who was just 38, would now miss out on a lifetime of milestones—walking his daughters down the aisle, family birthdays, and future grandchildren.
Police Condemn One-Punch Tragedy
Detective Chief Inspector Phil Walker, of Wiltshire Police’s Major Crime Investigation Team, said:
“A single punch has ruined the lives of a family. This should have been a joyful family weekend—yet ended in tragedy.”
He urged the public to recognise signs of escalating tension in social settings and to walk away before violence occurs:
“This is another example of how one punch can destroy lives. We ask people to look out for each other and make safe decisions.”
Background and Sentencing
Ben Starr was arrested at the scene and charged shortly after the incident. He was initially facing a trial but entered a guilty plea to manslaughter, accepting responsibility for the fatal assault.
The judge acknowledged the profound emotional damage to both families but handed down a two-year custodial sentence, taking into account Ben’s cooperation and remorse.
