The community is grieving the loss of two young lives as tributes pour in for Selena Lau and Nuria Sajjad, both eight years old, who tragically lost their lives when a car crashed into an end-of-term tea party at Study Prep School on Camp Road in Wimbledon.
Police were alerted to the incident at 9:54 am on Thursday, July 6, where multiple individuals were injured. Sadly, eight-year-old Selena Lau succumbed to her injuries that same day. The second girl, Nuria Sajjad, tragically passed away on Sunday, July 9.
The family of Nuria Sajjad released a heartfelt statement paying tribute to their “kind and generous” daughter. They expressed their deep sorrow and described Nuria as a source of joy, kindness, and generosity, loved by all who knew her. They thanked the emergency services, the staff at St George’s Hospital, and the parents and staff of the Study Prep for their support during this difficult time, requesting privacy.
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan also expressed his condolences, stating that his heart goes out to the family of Nuria Sajjad and all those affected by the tragic incident.
Selena Lau’s family described her as “adored and loved by everyone” and referred to her as their “shining star.” They paid tribute to her intelligence and cheeky nature, sharing a photograph of Selena beaming in her school uniform. The family requested privacy to mourn their loss.
Among the injured were several others, including a seven-month-old girl, who were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the car, a 46-year-old woman from Wimbledon, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. She was taken to the hospital and her condition was assessed as non-life threatening. She has been released on bail until a later date in July.
The incident has left the community in shock, particularly because it occurred on the last day of term, a day meant for celebration at the school. Local councillors expressed their disbelief and extended their sympathies, emphasizing the tight-knit nature of the community and the impact this tragedy has had on everyone.
